Working with farmers to solve the problem of milk quality in Brazil

The overall milk quality in Brazil is low. There aren’t enough solids (protein and fats) in the dairy. Danone has partnered with Brazilian farmers to solve this, improve their milk quality and increase the solid contents of their dairy.

Mais Solidos aims to increase the amount of protein and fats in Brazilian dairy, giving Brazilian farmers the ability to compete in a global market and become reliable partners in Danone’s product portfolio.

Mais Solidos rewards those who make the biggest improvement

Rather than discourage farmers, we want to actively encourage them to improve their solids content. We start by ranking the farmers we work with on different objective criteria.

Those who make the biggest strides are rewarded with prizes and credits they can use on Central de Compras, a Brazilian exchange market for farmers.

  • – The total solids content of their milk
  • – The evolution of the solids content.
  • – How much they’ve improved over the last year
  • – Their use of Central de Compras
  • – The purchases they’ve made during Danone Events
  • – 48h milk collection
  • – And the number of years they have been one of our suppliers, once again inspiring loyalty

Ranking farmers by their progress

We divide the Brazilian farmers we work with into three categories, based on their production capacity. That way the farmers get to compete with each other fairly

  • Farms producing less than 500 litres a day
  • Farms producing between 500 and 2000 litres a day
  • Farms producing more than 2000 litres a day

The program works

The program awards and stimulates farmers to actively improve their management skills and increase the solids content of their dairy. And it works.

Brazilian farmers can improve their technical and management skills through Educampo. Click here to learn more.

De solids content of the farms that are engaged with Mais Soilidos is much higher than that of others in the region.

A yearly improvement in quality dairy yield

We see a yearly increase in milk quality and quantity, firmly establishing Brazilian farmers as global partners. They are more actively involved in other Brazilian regenerative agriculture projects and milk projects as well, like:

Flora

Supporting Brazilian farmers with regenerative agriculture techniques

Educampo

Giving Brazilian farmers technical assistance and improving their management skills
