Pioneering animal welfare
Spain

At Danone, we believe animal welfare has a direct impact on the quality of our dairy products. That is why we work with the very best to improve the lives of our animals on a daily basis.
Spain is spearheading the animal welfare movement. Firmly placing the subject on the map for other countries as well.

Together with two global animal rights organisations, Compassion in World Farming and the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology, we are working towards a more animal-friendly way of farming in Spain.
Assessing where we are and aiming to do better
A dedicated team of field technicians visits our Spanish farms on a yearly basis. They assess how the animals are doing and support the farmers we work with implement actions that will have a positive impact.
In Spain, for example, heat stress is a real issue. Many of the farmers Danone works with, have taken it upon themselves to invest in fans, showers and shade for their animals in the summer.
They are also continuously training to do more and to do it better. The attendance of Danone’s workshops and trainings concerning animal welfare is sky-high. Not just because farmers want to receive a certificate, but also because they see the results for themselves.

Training farmers
Animal welfare is a prerequisite for Danone. And farmers are proud to work correctly.
They want their animals to thrive. All farmers know that when they take care of their dairy cows, their dairy cows will take care of them.
Healthy cows provide farmers with more milk and a better income.Â
Danone in Spain: certifiably committed to animal welfare
Every year we assess over 200 farms. Independent third-party auditors then verify our animal welfare assessment process.
Our Spanish products are even certified with the Animal Welfare Welfairâ„¢ certificate, telling our consumers that the farms that led to the finished products are dedicated to the welfare of their animals.
Spain has many projects in the works to improve animal welfare. The country is a leader in providing animals with the best living conditions. One of the projects contributing to this finds its roots in Galicia.
From the green hills of Galicia
The North-West of Spain is an area known as Galicia. It’s rich in green farmlands and the perfect place for a programme giving our dairy cows the freedom to roam and to graze.
Together with our partner farmers, we set up a programme giving dairy cows the very best living conditions. (This programme has since been discontinued)
- – A minimum of 150 days per year to graze
- – A minimum of 5 hours each day.
- – A maximum of 2,5 cows per hectare
- – A maximum of 40% of their feed can be compound feed (60% should be grazing & own fodder)
- – Fodder should be harvested at the farm level
